Each year IVCLA members gather to elect new directors to the board and directors returning for their second three-year term. We also present the year’s Outstanding Citizen Diplomat and Outstanding Professional Resource Awards. Guests enjoy a buffet dinner and international wine bar. It is also an opportunity to raise funds for IVCLA by bidding on exciting Silent Auction items and purchasing a ticket (or ten!) for our Annual International Year of Dining Drawing.

2013 Honorees

Alan & Joanne Kumamoto
Outstanding Citizen Diplomats

Alan and Joanne Kumamoto formed Kumamoto Associates in 1989 and have received numerous accolades for their work, including the National Public Relations Multi-Ethnic Award. They work not only for the betterment of the community, but for the betterment of the entire world. Their work has ranged from developing diversity training workshops for emerging Asian and Pacific Islander communities, to consulting for the Mayor's Neighborhood Crime Prevention Program. At the request of the U.S. Department of State, they traveled to Ghana and Turkey to conduct workshops on non-profit management. Joanne is former chair of American Women for International Understanding and received their top honor, the Bernice Behren Award. Alan was chairman of the National Council for International Visitors' board and received their inaugural Citizen Diplomat Pillar Award. Alan frequently gives his time providing management and leadership sessions for IVCLA's international visitors.

Outstanding Resource

Ozomatli was born as a multi-racial band in post-uprising 90's LosAngeles and are hailed as the voice of Los Angeles as well as citizens of the world. They have had the distinction of headlining theHollywood Bowl three times and L.A. has officially declared April 23rd as Ozomatli Day. Also a favorite of international audiences, they have performed from Japan to North Africa to Australia. Internationalist in its scope, their music blends traditions from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. They were invited by the U.S. State Department to serve as official Cultural Ambassadors on a series of tours to Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East. Despite their hectic schedules, members of the band take time to meet with international musicians participating in IVCLA programs. These meetings foster positive connections between Los Angeles and the rest of the world.

The 2013 Citizen Diplomacy Celebration was held at the beautiful Taglyan Cultural Complex in Hollywood. We would like to thank the Consuls General of Argentina, Australia, Hungary and Malibu Family Wines and Wafa J. Hoballah for donating all the wines for the international wine tasting.
